AN INQUIRY-BASED MATH CURRICULUM THAT USES MATH WORKSHOP EVERY DAY

Why we use math workshop every day

Classroom Video Library that Features Teachers Teaching in Powerful Math Workshops

Deepen content knowledge and strengthen teaching strategies through classroom video of the lessons from our units while collaborating with others.

See examples of our classroom video clips below, with hundreds of hours more on our Personalized Professional Support System (P2S2).

Students engaging in Cathy Fosnot's new 2nd grade unit called Pete's Penny Pockets where they explore the context of money to develop number sense, numeracy and fluency with addition and subtraction.

Teachers Develop Contexts that Kids Can Imagine

Contexts in CFLM go beyond just being "rich tasks" to sequences of contexts that are didactically crafted to ensure progressive development. The clip below is a sample of one of many on our P2S2 platform - this one from our new 2nd grade measurement unit, Tanisha and Tamika's Toolbox.

Students Engage in Rich Investigations

Once the context is developed, a rich investigation gets underway and the teacher plays a very important role in supporting the investigation with powerful questioning and conferring. In this sample video clip from our P2S2 platform, Cathy Fosnot supports the development of three 3rd graders as they work on an investigation from the Groceries, Stamps and Measuring Strips unit. See more clips like this on our P2S2 platform.

Supporting the Investigation

Feedback from Fellow Mathematicians

As students develop ways to share the insights they've had during the investigation, they prepare mathematical arguments to bring to their mathematical community and get feedback from their peers. Here, 4th graders are giving and getting feedback during the gallery walk after the investigation from a new 4th grade place value unit, Puzzle-Packing Companies. See more clips like this on our P2S2 platform.

Math Congress to Defend Mathematical Arguments

After students revise their arguments, the teacher facilitates a powerful Math Congress in a whole-class setting. In this clip, 2nd graders examine the structure of even and odd numbers after an investigation in the Beads, Shoes and Making Two's unit where they designed various sizes of egg cartons. Minilessons, Number Strings and Games to Support Fluency and Automatization of the Basic Facts

Each unit includes routines that are tightly connected to the investigations that provide opportunities for meaningful, thoughtful practice. In this clip, 2nd graders engage in a number string from the new 2nd grade measurement unit, Tanisha and Tamika's Toolbox while the teacher models their thinking on the open number line.

The Rhoda Red unit with the follow-up unit was a perfect pathway for helping young mathematicians develop deeper number sense with 5s and 10s. My kindergarten students can now add and subtract with a variety of strategies, and they know which strategies are most effective for certain problems.

Sam Davids

I love the 3rd grade multiplication units because right off the bat, the kids see that they're doing multiplication for the first time and they get very excited when they're grouping, doubling, doubling and halving and using partial products. The kids actually want to keep doing more and more in these units. How great is it that the kids are asking to keep doing more math!!

Connie Dent

I absolutely love how the Measuring for the Art Show unit uses the context of an art show to have kids construct the open number line. All the materials I've ever used just show kids a closed number line and all they do is count the tick marks. The kids were never using the number line to think with until I used this unit.

Full Core Curriculum

Built around Cathy Fosnot's developmental learning trajectories that identify the most important big ideas, strategies and models Contexts for Learning Mathematics has expanded to being a full-core curriculum aligned to the CCSSM.

Treat students like mathematicians every day with math workshop and support fluency of the basic facts with powerful number strings.

See how we address all standards at all grade levels.

Dynamic Assessment System

Authentic assessment needs to capture where the child is on the landscape of learning—where she has been, what her struggles are, and where she is going: it must be dynamic.

Now, teachers have a powerful way to document the journey while building a digital portfolio of each child's roadmap of development as they construct the most important big ideas, strategies and models.

See how we assess students' strategies, not just answers.

Online Professional Support System

Developed by Cathy Fosnot and Maarten Dolk, our rich library of NSF-funded classroom videos provides authentic examples of learning activites that support teachers in using the math workshop model.

Going well beyond a classroom video library, leaders can easily create and faciliate PLC's to support on-going, job-embedded professional learning that is connected to teachers' daily practice.
