Application Problems That Help
Teachers Teach - And Students Think
The VA SOL Application Problems for Grades 2 through 5 go beyond simply serving as sets of practice problems for students to work on already-known mathematics. Rather, these problems are intended to be used as vehicles to help students learn the mathematics specifically called for in the year-end objectives described in the VA SOL.
The VA SOL Application Problems provide fruitful teaching opportunities for students to engage with the Mathematical Process Goals. They are also used for differentiation, practice, targeted support and/or homework. These guides help teachers with:
When to use each problem with CFLM units and problem strings
Connecting work from other components to the Application Problems
Launching problems so all students have entry points
Sample questions and prompts for conferring with students
